Among the darlings of the underground intelligentsia, NYC duo Blues Control has been linked with a murderers’ row of independent record labels geared toward those who like their music and their drugs experimental — Holy Mountain, Woodsist, Siltbreeze, Not Not Fun. For new LP “Valley Tangents,” as if continuing some circuit, they aligned with Drag City.
The record continues Blues Control’s fascination with avant-jazz sounds, surprise noise blasts and interjected found sound. At its worst, it descends into hipster-approved elevator music, but more often than not it coalesces into something transcendent.
