In the ’90s, Rebecca Gates fronted acclaimed Sub Pop combo The Spinanes, one of those treasures that somehow didn’t make the cut for the “reunite to make big bucks” canon despite the passionate devotion of the faithful.

She has cool friends, yes — collaborators on Gates’ new album “The Float” include members of Califone, The Decemberists, Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Jicks, Iron and Wine, Wild Flag and trust me, the list goes on — but Gates never cedes center stage. Her calm, searching presence is all over this music, moody but hopeful experimental pop that proves she’s as vital as ever.

Whale Honey opens Saturday’s show.
