Liars keep finding new ways to sound oppressively dismal. In years past, the transient trio has channeled its peculiar breed of churlish art damage into disco-punk, junkyard noise, experimental euphoria and all-out onslaught rock.
Now comes “WIXIW,” a tough-to-pronounce but easy-to-digest set of gurgles and clicks. Devoid of physicality and created entirely inside computers, Liars’ latest conceptual jump-off seethes and sighs without unraveling the ominous thread that connects their discography.
For all the intellectual machinery at play, Saturday’s show at A&R will probably still crush you. The utterly charming indie pop combo Unknown Mortal Orchestra will set the stage.
