Hot workouts: CrossFit

From the August 16, 2012 edition

Don’t be fooled by the day’s early rays of sun dancing across Columbus Commons’ flowers. Things are about to get pretty ugly.

At least that’s how I felt in the midst of CrossFit, the private-gym-based workout program that’s one of several free classes offered weekly at Columbus Commons. The opening warm-up was easy, but the 45-minute WOD (Workout of the Day) can best be described as brutal.

On this particular day, the WOD was leg-centric, with very little downtime. Our instructor, standing in for the regular instructor, had us pair off with someone else and complete the following, with everything but running split evenly between partners: 100 burpees, 200 mountain climbers, 300 meters of lunges, 300-400 squats (it became a blur at that point) and running the length of the park four or so times.

Our instructor was matter-of-fact yet encouraging, shouting things like, “This is a great way to start your day!”

During one point in the running, I asked my partner about the regular instructor. Her response: “He’s a drill sergeant.”
