Have pop culture moments like “Bridesmaids” and HBO’s “Girls” ushered in a wave of raunchy female-centric comedies? I sure hope so, because I for one welcome our pottymouthed lady overlords. (Overladies?)
While the upcoming “The Bachelorette” looks like the obvious heir to “Bridesmaids” — basically “The Hangover” with chicks — the latest entry in the genre is “For a Good Time, Call ...” And it is, in fact, a good time.
Lauren (Lauren Miller) and Katie (Ari Graynor) were college frenemies who find themselves reunited by an amazing New York apartment — which will make anyone put aside their differences.
The prudish Lauren soon learns that Katie augments her income as a sex phone worker. Lauren is put off at first, but soon finds that her business sense could turn this into something much bigger.
It’s pretty easy to roll your eyes at the cliches here. There’s the fabulous NYC apartment angle. There’s the ridiculous sassy gay friend — Justin Long, who is actually pretty funny at that.
The script, co-written by Miller, doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It’s basically a love story, only for two female friends.
But there’s also the gleeful filthiness of the subject matter. The absurdity of phone sex is laid out in all its glory — look for some star cameos as the dudes on the other end of the line.
It’s got the DIY feel of a Kevin Smith film. Don’t expect “Bridesmaids,” but it’s worth the time.
