Even those who claim they listen to “everything but country” probably know Brooks & Dunn, unless they’ve so passionately shunned honky-tonk music that they’ve managed to avoid line-dancing anthem “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” for the past two decades.
Although that chart-topping duo is no more, both halves are soldiering on as solo acts. Kix Brooks, who often ceded the spotlight to Ronnie Dunn before, will have it all to himself Friday at The Bluestone.
“New To This Town,” Brooks’ first single since disbanding Brooks & Dunn, bears the marks of a crossover waiting to happen. The typical country instruments are in there somewhere, but it’s steeped in pop production (and Joe Walsh guitar work) that could just as easily land the song on adult contemporary stations. It’s not a blatant, Taylor Swift-style mainstream pander, but it’s not exactly Opry music either.
Chris Cavanaugh opens Friday’s show.
