Old 97’s at the Newport

A guy named Rhett Miller from Texas seems doomed to sing about sexy tractors and watermelon crawls should he dare come near a microphone, so the fact that Miller started a band that helped create an entirely new market for roots music is impressive (even if alt-country as a movement isn’t exactly surging right now).

Though its genre may be in need of a lightning bolt, Old 97’s is alive and well. For a preview of Saturday’s show at the Newport, check out the pair of live albums the Dallas combo recorded in their hometown’s Sons of Hermann Hall, The Grand Theatre, Volume 1 and Volume 2.
