If an outdoor party is popular enough to warrant shutting down one of the busiest blocks of High Street, why wouldn’t you attend? Perusing the clever costumes of 20,000 HighBall hoppers is worth the $5 cover alone, but here are some other attractions you don’t want to miss at the most fiendishly fabulous fest of the season.
New location. HighBall has moved! The Short North party now stretches from Nationwide Boulevard to Goodale Street. The new Hilton Columbus across from the Convention Center is one of the presenters and, as the party is right outside its extravagant doorstep, the hotel is offering special room rates and HighBall extras.
Contests. The main attraction is the couture costume show starting at 10 p.m. on the main stage featuring outrageous numbers from eight local fashion designers. Nina West emcees. There is also a dog costume contest earlier in the day, a costume trivia contest at Arena Grand Movie Theatre, and a cash-prize general public costume contest.
Street entertainment. Check out artist Coreoc painting a real-time ultraviolet mural, 15-foot-tall puppets dancing in the street, and a four-story-high video projection above the runway stage spitting out pre-recorded videos and real-time feeds of HighBall.
Booze. This is one of those tickets-for-drinks deals. Purchase tickets at booths located on the south and north ends of the event and in a courtyard by the Hilton; beverage stations will be set up on the sides of the street. All beer is $5 per pour. There will also be Captain Morgan-spiked apple cider drinks available at the Hot Spot by the Hilton, where the Latino Arts for Humanity will present sugar-skull painting demonstrations. Bring cash for the myriad food trucks that will also be at HighBall.
