The Sword does not fuss around with art or atmosphere on Apocryphon. For the most part, the new LP from Austin’s premier thrash masters is ball-busting party metal beamed in from the days when metal was essentially just exceptionally loud blues rock.
Things do turn slightly darker midway through the album, around the time “Excreator” starts shouting “You are nothing!” at you to the sounds of a more antagonistic chug. But generally it’s Zep and Sabbath essentials injected with Southern swagger — pure denim jacket fist-pump music. They’re exceptionally good at this sort of thing.
The almost comically metal-monikered Eagle Claw and Gypsyhawk open Thursday’s show.
