Susan Sontag’s venerable writings are respected in art, literature and gender studies circles. This production by New York’s contemporary theater company The Builders Association adapts volumes of the author’s journals written between 1947 and 1963. They show a woman hungry for knowledge and self-actualization.

Well-regarded actress Moe Angelos performs the role of Sontag, who is shown sitting at a table behind a scrim that projects videos of photos of the writer, letters, books and other important or touching Sontag ephemera.

The result is a dynamic stage and video telling of Sontag’s life before she became an activist worthy of history books and, notably, the partner of photographer Annie Leibovitz.
