Instagram can get ugly. Here are five pro tips to make your Instagrams more appealing!

Work the Frame

Use the Instagram format to your advantage! Play with the square as a way to emphasize other shapes.

Rule of Thirds

Imagine your frame has a tic-tac-toe board painted on top of it. Place your subject where the lines intersect.

3. Use the Light You’ve Got

Your flash will rarely work how you want, so turn it off! Use the light around you instead. Move subjects so light falls on their faces.

4. Know When to Use Your Flash

Available light isn’t always enough. That’s when you use your flash to supplement existing light. This is a last resort; make sure you’ve already capitalized on all other light sources.

5. Know How to Use Your Flash

Make sure you’re the right distance from your subjects for the flash to work properly – usually between two to six feet. Closer or farther than that, you’re going to start running into problems. These, specifically:

Taken too close, the flash washes out the subject.

Taken too far away, the flash will bleach out the entire image.
