If you’re heading to a holiday party this season and planning on picking up a six pack or two of your favorite brew on the way, don’t. It’s not that doling out a few bottles of craft beer to partygoers isn’t gracious or appreciated, but there’s a better way to bring beer to a party — growlers. Growlers, large glass bottles (usually 32- or 64-ounces) filled with draft beer, are growing increasingly popular because the best beers often taste better fresh off the tap. Besides, bringing a keg to a holiday party isn’t easy, and as much as we’d like to be, we’re not in college anymore.

Growlers offer a way to have draft beer at your holiday party without a lot of hassle. Parties are ideal because the beer loses its freshness once you’ve opened the growler, so it’s either binge or share. You can bring a variety — or better yet, have a number of partiers each bring one or two — and turn a humdrum holiday gathering into a festive beer tasting. A number of places, including the local breweries, around Columbus offer growler fills with some excellent beers. Many also sell growlers on site.
