The List: Top 10 stoner movies

With local film company Backward Slate Productions planning to shoot “Bong of the Living Dead” in February (see interview here), we’re looking at the top films in one of the genres they hope to make a dent in: the stoner movie.

10. “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”

Kevin Smith’s drug-dealing duo from “Clerks” got their own movie. ’Nuff said.

9. “Super Troopers”

Cops and stoners? Usually not a good fit. But this one makes the list for the opening scene in which troopers totally mess with some dudes in a traffic stop. “The snozzberries taste like snozzberries.”

8. “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”

Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn should get a lifetime stoner achievement award for his perpetually baked surfer Jeff Spicoli.

7. “Half Baked”

Dave Chappelle’s loving stoner/slacker movie was an early intro to one of the funniest comics of a generation. And co-star SNL alum Jim Breuer looks high all the time anyway.

6. “Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas”

Johnny Depp’s pitch-perfect Hunter S. Thompson imbibes in a kaleidoscope of illegal substances. Weed is in there somewhere, of course.

5. “Pineapple Express”

When you think “stoner,” you don’t think “action,” but David Gordon Green’s over-the-top farce delivered. James Franco and Danny McBride even managed to turn Seth Rogen into the straight man.

4. “Up in Smoke”

“Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong turned stoner comedy into a cottage industry in the ’70s, but this film was their pinnacle.

3. “Friday”

Two slacker friends played by Ice Cube and, in a breakout role, Chris Tucker, spend a day hanging out (and smoking). Hilarity ensues.

2. “The Big Lebowski”

The Dude abides.

1. “Dazed and Confused”

Richard Linklater’s day-in-the-life tale of a Texas high school had a huge dose of ’70s nostalgia, but stoners of all generations enjoy the laid-back slow ride.
