Other than that pitiable minority that rides for the band’s 21st-century output, everybody knows Weezer’s first two albums are twin towers of 1990s nerdery whose heights the band will probably never scale again.
Unfortunately, the real Weezer insists on performing all that latter day refuse in concert. Fortunately, The Pinkertones need not trifle with that. The tribute band — comprising Columbus rock mainstays Phil Cogley, Jacob Wooten, Ben Schreiber, Alex Weinhardt and Pete Cottell — trades exclusively in songs from the self-titled “Blue Album,” Pinkerton and era-appropriate B-sides.
For those reared on such seminal alt-rock sounds, it’s a catalog worth preserving for posterity, even if somebody else has to step up and carry the torch.
