This weekend, the Short North Stage’s popular Cabernet Cabaret series kicks off its 2013 season. Executive producer Rick Gore will have you know that entertaining in the seemingly loose, anything goes style of a cabaret isn’t as easy as it may look.
“It’s much harder to produce a good cabaret than most people realize,” Gore said. “The performer has to concoct a narrative thread and be able to hold the audience for two 45-minute acts of songs and patter.”
The players in Cabernet Cabaret’s first installment are up to the challenge. “Two Men and a Piano” stars CATCO’s associate producing director Joe Bishara and former Broadway player Matt Clemens. The fun will be had in the Stage’s Green Room.
The friends’ two-man show will focus on musicals they’ve performed in together, such as “Hairspray, “Avenue Q” and “Evil Dead.”
Plus, in good old cabaret fashion, they’ll challenge their comedic timing with Abbott and Costello-style skits. Tickets are $15-$18.
