Many rappers’ albums get pushed back by a month or two, but the ones that measure delays in years tend to be masterpieces (Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty) or disasters (Dr. Dre’s Detox, almost certainly, if it ever emerges).
Young Jeezy’s TM: 103 Hustlerz Ambition, though? It’s merely solid — better than “meh,” but not quite “wow.” The record feels a little paint-by-numbers: Here’s Future for the Mike Will Made It sugar rush! Here’s 2 Chainz for the horndog anthem! Here’s Fabolous and Jadakiss for the serious-business coke-dealing track! Here’s Jill Scott for the ghetto spiritual! Here’s Snoop Dogg for the goofy weed song! Don’t forget T.I.’s mournful meditation on fame, or Ne-Yo’s sensitive crossover bid, or Jay-Z and Andre 3000’s middle-aged marriage ode.
All of those songs are awesome, though, so there’s minimal reason to complain. It’s just good to have Jeezy’s husky emphysema holler back. He plays the LC on Friday.
