Jamaican Queens at Double Happiness

Ever since Animal Collective veered toward spacey, psychedelic, hip-hop-inflected synth music with 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, so did the legion of avant pop bands under their influence. Jamaican Queens, a partnership between two former members of Detroit chamber folk band Prussia, are near the top of that heap.

Debut single “Kids Get Away” rides an acoustic-inflected Yoshimi gurgle all the way to near-transcendence. Meanwhile, their cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “When You Sleep” chops, screws and drifts skyward. And is that a spliced snippet of the “Maybach Music” drop for the big finish?

Golden Death Music opens Friday’s show at Double Happiness.
