Staff Pick: Ex Cops at Kobo

By
From the February 28, 2013 edition

Brooklyn’s Ex Cops play the sort of airy guitar pop that runs the risk of sounding dated or dead, a reverent, reverb-enhanced jangle dutifully transporting a baton once carried by Flying Nun Records, Teenage Fanclub, The Lemonheads and Girls.

All that music is splendid, though, so even stingy portions of pathos effectively tip the scales into splendor. Thus, debut album True Hallucinations is outright spectacular, a marvel of melody and nuance assembled by people who understand music’s mechanics as well as its magic.

Their appearance with Tin Armor and Kid Runner continues this city’s odd streak of must-see Monday shows this winter.
