“I think I love you are horrible,” sings Darwin Deez on recent single “You Can’t Be My Girl,” and it approximates the typical response to the North Carolina-born Wesleyan dropout’s digitized indie rock.
There’s a lot to like about Deez, particularly the way his guitar-charged music and humorous videos recapture the best aspects of mid-’90s MTV.
Still, his nasal vocals and pseudo-philosophical lyrics conspire to block the shine. The songs start out exceedingly promising, but after repeated exposure they start to gnaw.
Still, there’s a good chance his show Monday at Ace of Cups with Caged Animals and June66 will be farcically fun.
