Last month, promising Chicago upstart Chance the Rapper performed at Skully’s for AnimalXHouse, but I was at home scrambling to pack for a vacation the next day. Fortunately, the man behind last year’s sleeper hit 10 Day mixtape (recorded during a 10-day suspension from high school) was all over SXSW last week, so I caught him in action at the Red Bull party.
“Juice,” the sing-songy single from his upcoming Acid Rap tape, does not lie: Chance overflows with excitement and creativity, a spazzy/spicy counterpart to Kendrick Lamar’s smooth, soulful virtuosity. Other early tracks suggest the project will be among 2013’s hottest when it drops April 30.
Chance opens for Kids These Days this Monday at The Basement. See him up close while you still can.
