Staff Pick: The 1975 stand out among British buzz bands

I usually feel like these British buzz bands are all the same, and a name like The 1975 doesn’t do much to indicate that the Manchester quartet will add up to anything more than your average Yank-obsessed, NME-approved guitar goons.

But these guys have something to offer beyond Strokes and Oasis worship — namely, a softer touch and a knack for gleaming, grandiose yacht pop. And while some listeners would probably take one whiff of synthetic radio-ready singles like “You” and “Chocolate” and wish they did sound like The Strokes, to these ears it’s manna.

They’ll play The Basement with Kid Runner this Thursday.
