Black metal seems easy enough to pull off assuming you have loud enough amplifiers, a drummer in decent cardiac condition and a vocalist with sufficiently demonic lung capacity.

But the further you delve into the genre — and I say this as someone with not much more than a pinky toe dipped in — the more the great ones stand out.

So “Barren Earth,” the closing track from New Hampshire quartet Vattnet Viskar’s self-titled EP, very quickly emerges as an out-and-out triumph of desolation.

The band hits Kobo this Thursday on the way back from a critically acclaimed SXSW stint. Black Table, VYGR and Meadowhoof round out the lineup.
