Do you realize Bad Religion has been around 34 years? True story. When they started, Greg Graffin was 14 years old; now he’s 48. He’s probably gained a lot of perspective since then, but on the recent True North, the M.O. is still essentially the same: Loud, simple, smart and catchy as hell (religious pun).
Against Me! was originally slated to open Thursday’s show at the Newport, which would have been an especially big deal because that band hasn’t played here since singer-guitarist Tom Gabel came out as transgender and became Laura Jane Grace. But given Bad Religion’s famously energetic live presence and a back catalog thick enough to swat the most nightmarish insects, it’ll probably still be awesome, particularly with The Bronx and Polar Bear Club in tow instead.
