Way Yes, Tog Pebbles

I’ll have a proper feature on these guys and their new record in a few weeks (it drops May 7 on Lefse Records), but for now, I’ll just say this: It absolutely fulfills the potential they hinted at with those fantastic EPs.

Federico Higuain

When the Crew signed Guillermo Barros Schelotto, his influence took a few months to seep into the club dynamic, but by the following season Columbus was hoisting MLS Cup. Fellow Argentine Higuain arrived last summer and sent a similar shock down my spine. Now, four matches into this season, you can feel the newly minted captain’s influence shaping his teammates the same way Schelotto used to. Higuain’s instinct and pizzazz is a major reason the Crew seems to be back in contention.

The Americans” on FX

I’m only four episodes in (so don’t spoil me, jerks!), but I only needed one episode to become infatuated with Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as KGB agents posing as well-mannered American travel agents.

Columbus Brewing Company Bodhi DIPA

For such a hoppy beer, Bodhi goes down crisp and smooth. It tastes like summer to me, and given how stubborn spring has been about arriving in Columbus, I’ll take any opportunity to convince my senses that I’m in warmer climes.

“Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation” by Jeff Chang

When I went away with my wife in February to celebrate our anniversary, I finally cracked into Jeff Chang’s epic 2005 treatise on the rise of hip-hop as the world’s predominant youth culture. There’s tons of great musical information in there, but better still is the cultural context Chang provides; he takes three chapters to expound on the political rot in the Bronx and Jamaica that led to a new musical movement before actually getting around to Kool Herc’s hip-hop big bang.
