Columbus Arts Fest: All under one roof ... well, tent

Though it’s pretty new to the Columbus Arts Festival scene — this is its second year in the fest — The Big Local Art tent is one of the prime places patrons can get a true taste of the artistic talent thriving in Columbus.

Under one large tent, 10 local groups and collectives, including Etsy Team Columbus, Columbus Idea Foundry, Cap City Creatives and Rivet Art Gallery, will show off their talents and sell their work, which can range from ceramics and glassware to leatherwork, illustrations, paintings and hand embroidery (and stock will shift every day, so patrons will always see something new).

Just outside the tent, many groups will provide arts and crafts sessions for adults and kids, wherein patrons can create a number of make-and-take works of art, such as screen-print shirts, lathe-turned wooden pens, pewter sculptures, jewelry and hair accessories. Some groups will also show live demonstrations, such as journal making and hand pottery.

These sessions and demos are perhaps as important if not more important than the selling of work, notes Jamie Hevener, captain of Esty Team Columbus.

“Being inclusive and empowering others through creativity is a big part of our team's mission,” she said. “We want to spark creativity in others and get them excited about being creative. It brings more appreciation for hand-crafted things.”
