ComFest beer mug changes explained

ComFest beer mugs are shrinking this year, which will (supposedly) shorten lines and (definitely) prevent festival-goers from sneaking extra beer for their money.

According to a memo circulated among ComFest beer booth volunteers, the festival’s signature souvenir mugs will downsize from 32 ounces to 20 ounces. According to the memo from beer committee head Jen Secrest, “They will still have the year’s logo printed on them and they will still come in all of the colors everyone loves.”

It now costs one token to fill the mugs. The cost of blue tokens (for domestic beer) is going up from $4 to $5, while black tokens (for craft beer) will rise in price from $5 to $6. Per ounce, the price of beer is essentially unchanged.

So why change the mug size at all? The memo explains, “We hope that this will cut down beer lines and make the job of the beer volunteers easier and more accurate. There will now be only one beer size.”

Although the connection between smaller mugs and shorter lines seems sketchy, one thing’s for sure: The new procedures will make it impossible to sneak extra beer as in previous years, when one token and a knowing wink would sometimes fill your 32-ounce mug to the brink.

Festival-goers are still allowed to bring back mugs from previous years, but it will cost them. Secrest’s memo continues, “If someone insists on using an old 32-ounce mug, we will accept them this year HOWEVER we will NOT be doing any partial pours. They would have to pay with two tokens (blue, black or white) for a full mug. In other words, they would be paying for 40 ounces of beer but only getting 32 ounces, so it isn't likely many customers will choose this option.”

On the plus side, they'll be serving two varieties of mixed drinks near the I Wish You Jazz stage. The drinks will be pre-mixed in large coolers and sold for the price of one black token.
