Concert preview: Baltimore’s Future Islands trade in big, weird spectacle

Future Islands tends to perform in tiny spaces — like, say, Rumba Café, where they’ll play Thursday. But the Baltimore trio is otherwise all about big things: ideas (2011’s heavily conceptual On the Water, spectacles (frontman Sam Herring’s untamed on-stage convulsions), sounds (the sky-high synth music that undergirds everything).

Anyone with a taste for the eccentric will probably find something to like about this crew, associates of Dan Deacon’s Wham City collective whose knack for the absurd and uncomfortable might even make Deacon feel strange.

Fellow Baltimore act Chiffon, whose Bandcamp tags include “funk” and “cosmic romance,” opens Thursday’s show.
