Staff Pick: An Evening with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Dawn McCarthy

By Matthew Lovett
From the August 1, 2013 edition

I feel like Will Oldham, aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy is always rollin’ through the Wexner. After all, he was here by himself just back in January and had played there a couple years in the past. This time Billy’s coming back with Faun Fables’ Dawn McCarthy in promotion of their recent collaborative release of Everly Brothers coversWhat the Brothers Sang

The new record is a bit of a rebranding for the Everly Brothers tunes. McCarthy and Billy capture the brothers’ close harmonies to a degree, but forego the warmth of their original ’60s rockabilly aesthetic. In turn, the music feels like dusk with the balladry masked by the standard McCarthy/Billy roots stylings. There’s no shame in this; in this lens the music becomes repurposed in a manner that’sintimate and pulls a keen ear.
