Staff Pick: Locrian’s largely instrumental songs unfold like multi-part suites

On past albums like Drenched Lands, Chicago-and-Baltimore drone metal trio Locrian conjured images of once-great cities now choked with smog, decay and death.

Despite its title, the band’s latest full-length studio album, Return to Annihilation, charts a more optimistic course, weaving gorgeous epics (the piano-and-string kissed “Obsolete Elegies”) alongside the standard corrosive fair.

Even at its darkest, however, there’s an almost orchestral swell to Locrian’s metallic dirges, and the largely-instrumental songs have a tendency to unfold like multi-part suites. If the Grim Reaper ever commissioned a symphony, one imagines it would sound something like this.
