Distilled: Good things happening for Four String

Four String Brewery had some big developments recently. The Grandview brewery opened the doors on its long-awaited taproom Oct. 4 and signed a distribution deal with Superior Beverage a few days later. What does this mean for the brewery? More beer and an on-premise place to drink it.

“I’m looking forward to being able to put more time and resources into expanding our production and focusing on just the beer, and a little bit less on distribution,” said owner Dan Cochran.

The taproom was created by knocking down a wall between the former, smaller growler fill taproom and the brewing area. The open space houses a dozen or so tables and seats at the bar. And most eye-catchingly, a direct view in to where the beer is made.

“I think it’s important and it’s great that local beer drinkers have an interest in coming to a brewery to sit down and have a beer,” Cochran said. “They know they’re drinking fresh beer because they can see it being made all around them.”

The taproom is open 4-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 12-11 p.m. Saturdays. Currently there are five beers on tap and the occasional cask as well. But the number of beers will be expanding.

By signing the distribution deal with Superior Beverage, Cochran will now focus more on brewing new styles. He’s very pleased with Four String’s seasonal output and plans to expand those; a vanilla porter will be out for winter. There are also plans to create some one-off experiments to serve exclusively in the taproom.

The distribution deal also means Four String will be available in more bars and restaurants around town. Expanding to the Cleveland market is in the future as well.

Cochran also said he plans to purchase a larger production facility off-site from the current location in the next year. The original location and taproom will still be around, possibly used for creating new recipes and specialty brews.
