Concert preview: Steve Vai’s latest provides ample ammo for fans and detractors

Steve Vai is a divisive figure.

Long hailed for his virtuosic approach to his instrument (the guy can flat-out play anything thrown at him), he’s also been equally derided for his music’s sometimes antiseptic feel (a complaint similarly lobbed at fellow technicians Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen).

His latest full-length, The Story of Light, provides ample ammo for both sides of the debate, tempering inventive solos with new age flourishes that reek of pretension.
