Concert preview: Holy Ghost! fails to leave a mark with Dynamics

By Columbus Alive
From the November 7, 2013 edition

Brooklyn synth-pop duo Holy Ghost! Might have titled its latest album Dynamics, but the album is surprisingly even-keeled, humming along as steadily as a life support system, never getting too high or too low. The same goes for the lyrics, which stick mainly to playful asides (“Dumb Disco Ideas”) and rarely dig beneath the surface, excepting one tune, “Bridge and Tunnel,” that bemoans NYC’s transformation into a playground for the rich and the famous.

While keeping things light makes for a pleasant atmosphere — the duo of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel specializes in music that can comfortably play in the background during dinner parties and quiet nights at home — it means the songs are less likely to stick, and most of these tunes disappear like mist in the early morning sun, or ghosts, as it were.

Midnight Magic and DJ Moxy open the show.
