Nightlands is an appropriate name for a project whose recordings often come on like the soundtrack to a waking dream. On “Time and Place,” the opening track on 2012’s Oak Island, Dave Hartley, who records and performs under the moniker, invites listeners back to “a place [he] used to go when [he] was 17.”
While much of the album sounds similarly obsessed with the past, its delicate collection of synths and strings evoking hazy childhood memories, a number of the lilting, soft-rock songs appear to be born of love. So when Hartley, who doubles as the bassist in War on Drugs, titles a track “I Fell in Love with a Feeling,” there’s little doubt it’s romance that has set his heart aflutter.
