The chest-thumping Columbus rapper ventured deeper than battle-boasts on his 2012 album God Save the King when he touched on the loss of his parents. “To keep it all the way honest / I’m still not over the death of my mama or father,” he rhymed in his booming, boot-heel-on-concrete cadence. “I’m trying to get by it, I promise.” It was a brief-but-welcome moment of vulnerability that helped establish the MC as a three-dimensional figure, and pointed to even better things in the future.
The rapper headlines an eclectic bill at Café Bourbon Street this weekend that also includes local garage-rockers Day Creeper, electro-leaning Tyrant Manque and dance music spun by DJ Kevin Failure. Additionally, all door proceeds and 10 percent of bar sales will be donated to the Redbird Books-to-Prisoners program, which helps supply reading material to the incarcerated.
