For more than 15 years, the Colorado crew, anchored by co-singer/songwriters and lone constants Chad Price and Jon Snodgrass, specialized in snarling, country-tinged burners that sounded as though they could have been in regular rotation on the “Road House” jukebox. The group’s new self-titled album pulls back slightly on the reigns, incorporating introspective tunes that explore the memories of days long gone (“Ghosts of High School”) and the ways absence can make the heart grow fonder (“Like Longfellows”).
Yes, the band can (and does) let it rip now and again — “Not That Kind,” for one, sounds ready to exchange punches — but it’s the slower numbers, like bruises, that have a tendency to linger.
