The Virginia-based crew has an old-timey sound to match its old-timey name, borrowing liberally from the worlds of bluegrass, folk and jam. There’s never any doubting the band’s desired audience — the group relocated to Charlottesville due in part to the presence of The Dave Matthews Band, and it covered the Grateful Dead (“He’s Gone”) on its 2012 album Silver Sky — but the musicians uncover enough new wrinkles in the established formula to appeal to those outside the tie-dyed jam world.
Like many of its brethren in the scene, the Stringdusters’ music encourages movement. The band’s biography notes fans should wear comfortable shows because “nobody sits at an Infamous Stringdusters show.” Consider this your warning.
