Saving money isn’t my strong suit. In fact, I probably have a negative balance right now because I have poor impulse control and a shoe fetish. But what I lack in self-control, I make up for in creativity. Instead of hitting the shops and praying my credit card doesn’t get declined, here are some fun DIY gifts for those of us who can’t budget but still want our loved ones to have a great holiday.
Snow globe: For the sentimental person on your shopping list.
Materials: Mason jar, or other water-tight jar and lid combo, glycerin, glitter, water, small toys or things to decorate with, glue.
Choose some toys/knick-knacks/whatever you want in your snow globe and arrange them creatively on the lid of your jar and glue them in place.
After the glue is dry, fill the jar with water and your choice of glitter.
Add the glycerin.
Secure the lid onto the full jar.
Flip over and enjoy! Look at the sparkles!
Flower crown: Since tickets to Coachella are probably out of the question, why not make a fun accessory so they can dress like they went.
Materials: Plastic headbands, faux flowers, scissors, hot glue gun.
Remove the fabric bloom from the plastic stems.
Arrange the flowers onto the headband.
Glue into place. (Layering helps add volume, and hides glue blobs.)
Look awesome. Lana Del Rey wishes she was as thrifty as you.
Cranberry/lime-infused vodka: For all your fun, drunk friends.
Materials: Sealable jar or bottle, cranberries, limes, vodka, sugar.
Poke holes in cranberries and fill your bottle up a third of the way.
Cut off the rind of the lime and place in the bottle.
Fill the bottle the rest of the way with cranberries.
Pour in 1 teaspoon of sugar.
Pour in the vodka and seal.
Leave the concoction anywhere from two weeks to two months. The longer it sits, the sweeter it will become. Make a custom tag for the intended recipient for an extra touch of love.
Get drunk! You made it for them, so they have to share it with you. It’s, like, a law or something.
