The Long Island teenager with the hairdo reminiscent of a black and white cookie sprung into the public consciousness with her appearance on “The Voice” in 2012. While she didn’t win, her unique take on songs by The White Stripes (“Seven Nation Army”) and Britney Spears (“Toxic”) endeared her to fans and offered some hope her own material would stray from the bland, paint-by-number template followed by most reality television alumni.

Judging by her earliest solo forays, the singer is all-to-eager to distance herself from this made-for-TV persona. The original song “A Million Men,” for one, tells the tale of a woman sold into sex trafficking — a topic even renowned Lothario and “Voice” judge Adam Levine might have been put off by if she’d attempted to perform the tune in her time on the show.
