Nearly a decade after Ron Burgundy anchored his way into our hearts, we get a sequel that begged just one thing: Don’t f--- this up. I am happy to report that Will Ferrell and company indeed did not f--- this up.
“Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” reunites the whole news team (Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner) this time placing them in the advent of a new 24-hour news network.
The sequel starts strong with the familiar brand of Burgundy humor. Ferrell’s signature character is the best fit for the noisy aloof idiot he plays so well. The rest of the core crew have sharpened their talents as well. When “Anchorman 2” fires on all cylinders, you won’t find a funnier movie.
Of course, a little sequel-itis creeps in. The plot moves too many directions, some funny (an awkward romance between Carell’s Brick Tamland and Kristen Wiig), some not (a drawn-out and cameo-filled attempt to one-up the newsteam fight).
Still, I can’t imagine many fans will come away disappointed with the amount of laughs to be had here. I would even welcome another sequel. Stay unclassy, Ron Burgundy.
