Things We Love: Vicki Hink’s picks

When The Angry Baker opened in Olde Towne East a few years ago, owner/chef Vicki Hink didn’t expect to be so busy. As anyone who’s tried to find a seat during Sunday brunch can attest, the space fills up quickly. Recently, Hink decided to reassess the entire eatery’s layout. The bakery closed five days for renovations to start the new year and is now re-open with additional seating, a more efficient layout and a new pastry and bread display among other additions. These are a few of her favorite things.

Soy Chai Latte from Upper Cup Coffee Co. in Olde Towne East

I always have them load it with cinnamon. It’s really spicy and has a strong chai flavor. It’s right here in the neighborhood too. Being a baker and working long hours, I definitely consume more caffeine than I need to; it’s either black coffee or soy chai.

Ahi Burger from Wolf’s Ridge Brewing

I love the freshness of the tuna and all the layers in that sandwich. It’s a really, really good burger, especially if you don’t do a lot of red meat or pork. I haven’t tried their beer yet, but the food is amazing. It’s really refined and not what I was expecting.

Leopard print slippers from Bedroom Athletica

With all this renovation, I pretty much think about those all day long. The first thing I do when I get home is put them on, especially with the freezing cold weather. They’re really warm and comfortable. I discovered them while trying to find the perfect gift for my sister, Aunt Judy and my mom. I wanted to get them something fun and I found these at Nordstrom. They’re perfect. I got everyone in my family a pair, just a different color.

Cilantro Lime Ice Cream from Lick Ice Cream in Austin, Texas

Friends of mine own this ice cream place in Austin, Texas. They do delivery and they’ve been shipping it to me to test their online shipping. I’ve had the Cilantro Lime and their vegan ice cream made with coconut milk. The Cilantro Lime is a fun flavor, it’s really light and really good. If I eat ice cream or I have something like that, it’s usually in the winter.

“Orange is the New Black”

I found out about the show from the girls at the bakery talking about it. I watched it in three sittings, all of it back-to-back-to-back. I hate when I have to wait a week. I’ll usually binge-watch once a season’s over and I can get through a season in a couple days. I’m impatient. It’s a great show to watch after working at the bakery. I just turn my brain off and watch the drama.
