The newborn crew, which released its debut album Fingerprint last year, boasts two members from the late, loved Dayton rock group Enon: John Schmersal and Rick Lee.
Like Enon, Crooks on Tape specializes in trippy pop tunes that, at times, barely sound tethered to reality. Instrumental jam “Tito’s Riser” could accompany a particularly gnarly acid trip, while the Novocain-numb “Wandered Again” builds around muted drums, shaggy-sweater vocals and a guitar effect that mimics a lonesome seagull’s cry.
This is what could pass for straightforward pop on the other side of the looking glass.
