David Mayfield opens his sophomore LP Good Man Down singing, “I left Ohio when I thought I was a man.”
The singer-songwriter — and older bro to musician sister Jessica Lea Mayfield — then spends the rest of the mellow, Americana-flecked effort wrestling with those issues that hit home as one enters into adulthood, namely love, death and what it takes to grow into the person you were meant to be.
It’s a newfound level of maturity that reaches a peak on the introspective “Was It Only Me.”
“Time would tell it was me who was changing,” he sings atop a lush bed of string and acoustic strumming.
Gradually the music follows suit, and these subtler details give way to a grungy rock riff that, like life itself, grows both harder and more chaotic as the song builds to its cathartic close.
