Good lord, George Strait was born with the ideal name. John McCain might’ve labeled his campaign bus the Straight Talk Express, but the descriptor is better suited to the Texas-born country singer, who takes a deceptively simple approach to his writing.
The songs populating last year’s Love Is Everything continue this trend, with Strait unflinchingly singing of broken hearts, broken dreams and broken lives in his warm, grandfatherly drawl. “I do what my heart says do,” he croons on “I Thought I Heard My Heart Sing.”
It’s a piece of advice Strait has hewed to throughout his career, which has stretched across four decades and only now appears to be winding down. The singer has billed this run of shows the Cowboy Rides Away Tour, and it’s difficult to imagine he won’t hold true to his word. Don’t miss it.
