The “Cruzamentos: Contemporary Brazilian Documentary” component of “Via Brasil” presents one of its most compelling selections in the series.

“Housemaids” (directed by Gabriel Mascaro) takes the avant-garde approach of having the subjects of the film also act as directors — teenagers in Brazil were asked to film their housemaids for a week — to examine the complexity between the two, Brazil’s ties to its colonial past and an employee-employer relationship that often confuses intimacy and power.
