It’s difficult to think of birds as crushing beasts, but this is certainly the case with Chicago black metal trio Immortal Bird, which thrashes, shrieks, stomps and howls its way through the four tracks on its 2013 debut EP Akrasia.
The song titles offer some hint of the chaos within. “Ashen Scabland” is Cormac McCarthy-bleak, layering pulverizing riffs, muscular drums and frontwoman Rae Amitay’s guttural screams, while “Spitting Teeth” is every bit as bruising and violent as its grizzled brawler of a title might suggest.
Usually things this dark, twisted and menacing are accompanied by some kind of restraining order, but fans won’t be forced to navigate any legal hurdles when the crew kicks off a short East Coast tour with its concert at Ace of Cups this weekend. Black Antler and 1point3 open the show.
