Despite the name, there’s little light and carefree about San Francisco trio Weekend’s mascara-smeared post-punk sound, which, at times, conjures images of the Cure at its bleakest.
But while the band’s debut cast the crew in stark black-and-white, its sophomore album, Jinx, introduces varying shades of gray. Witness “It’s Alright,” a rhythmic, guitar-driven monster where the sunlight nearly reaches the bottom of the well. Even so, the band is at its best when it’s at its most moribund, and there are plenty of songs here as cold and towering as New York City skyscraper-lined streets on a winter’s night.
Cities Aviv and Golden Death Music also perform.
