Staff Pick: Bun B goes it alone — for the most part

Texas rapper Bun B had a full-time solo career unexpectedly thrust upon him when UGK partner Pimp C died of a codeine cough syrup overdose in late 2007. Even so, the MC, born Bernard Freeman, sounds entirely at home on albums like Trill OG and last year’s Trill OG: The Epilogue, which pair his booming, concrete-hard vocals with an assortment of shimmering beats that glitter and shine like club lights flickering off a polished stripper pole.

Of course, these albums are really solo in name only. Bun B has a tendency to invite a few too many guests to the party, and Epilogue is loaded with so many features that the contributor credits read like a who’s who of Southern hip-hop. He won’t have the same luxury here, and the spotlight should remain blissfully on the MC when he swings by Skully’s for a concert on Monday.

Kirko Bangz also performs.
