Any day that puts "free" and "comic book" in its title is A-OK with me. If you're unfamiliar with this what-should-be-a-national-holiday day, it's basically this: Comic shops around the country give away free comics (selected in advance by publishers).

That’s pretty much it, though some shops offer much more, like in-store appearances by superheroes (or those dressed as superheroes), comic book artists or actors that have appeared in comic book movies. Like Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four movies. Jones will be at Packrat Comics in Hilliard.
As always, though, the real appeal are the comics. Highlights this year include Ed Piskor’s “The Hip-Hop Family Tree,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “The Tick.”
Ask your friendly neighborhood comics shop about their own specials. And, word to the wise, it’s best to show up a little early if you want to avoid long lines.
