Theatre preview: AVL’s “Cock” is a love-triangle tale with depth and complexity

Available Light Theatre is adapting the award-winning (2010 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre) British play from Mike Bartlett, directed by AVL member Ian Short, for its latest production. Some of you may find the title a turn-off (or turn-on, I guess), but whatever the case, this is an impressively written and witty play.

“Cock” is the story of John, his long-time boyfriend and his new girlfriend. You can see how this could get messy quick, and does during a dinner party attended by all three. Even though John is dedicated to both his boyfriend and girlfriend, he’s eventually forced to make a choice between the two — something he’s not particularly good at.

On the surface “Cock” may seem like a simple love-triangle tale. But subtexts on intimate relationships, unforeseeable consequences and questioning one’s sexual — and more importantly personal — identity, present some serious depth.
