The most recent album from local noisemakers Unholy 2 opens with a guitar riff like an industrial drill bit and a tortured scream, and only grows darker and more desperate from there. Song titles like “Corrupt” and “Survivor Series” barely begin to hint at the devastation within, and everything here sounds somehow corroded, corrupted, tainted, spoiled and ruined. It’s also undeniably thrilling — a blast of cancerous noise rock that appears to view humanity as simply another affliction to be snuffed out.
Though the music itself conjures nightmarish images of torture chambers and battered hellscapes, it sounds utterly fantastic in doing so, thanks in part to the care taken in capturing every horrifying detail (it was laid to tape at Musicol Recording Studio and mastered at Bob Weston’s Chicago Mastering Service). Expect Ace of Cups to keep the lights appropriately low for this chilling affair.
Slave House and Cheater Slicks open the show.
